| | | Hello Little Shop Family March is all about Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies
Hello Garden Family, Jeremy here with Little Shop. Can you believe it, we are in March already and spring is right around the corner. March 19th is the official start of Spring, and we couldn’t be any happier. We all know that winter can bring on the blues, so it’s time to celebrate and get outside. For the month of March, we want to promote healthy minds and healthy bodies, and, in my opinion, it starts with your diet. We’ve all heard the saying, you are what you eat, and it couldn’t be truer. If you’re not feeding your body good nutritious fruits and vegetables, and all your consuming is processed foods and fast food, it’s time to change those habits and begin to grow your own food, at least some of it. I know it could be a bit challenging to grow every single thing you eat, so let’s not get overwhelmed, and only start growing one or two of your favorite things to eat. You can start by seed or if you want to speed things up, purchase some established plant starts and transplant them into a rich organic soil full of organic amendments, perlite for air and drainage, coco fiber to retain moisture and beneficial bacteria & fungi for a healthy root zone. All of which can be purchased right here at your favorite neighborhood garden store Little Shop of Hydros. We are here to help you succeed in becoming a farmer, we care about your health and want to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle. We offer lots of classes on growing food, whether you want to grow indoor or outdoor we have you covered. The only thing stopping you is “you”, so break free and gain freedom over your diet, your future self will thank you. If you didn’t know already, I volunteer at Sunnyslope High School and lead their garden club. To date, we have been very successful teaching the next upcoming generation where food comes from and how to successfully grow an abundance of food. At the end of last year 2023, we lost our outdoor garden area at the school due to construction and remodeling. Since then, we were able to secure funds to purchase a Tower Garden to continue the club, last week we set up the tower and this week we are planting it. The students have impressed me with their willingness to learn and their commitment to show up every meeting even after school hours. If you could only see the impact we have made, it is truly amazing. If you live in Sunnyslope or have grown up here like I have, you know how important community support is, I’m calling on my fellow gardeners to help me make an even bigger impact. We, as in the kids of Slope, (I’m speaking for them) need your help with donations so we can buy more towers and implement them around Sunnyslope campus. We are raising money to purchase additional towers and if you are able and willing to help, we would greatly appreciate any and all donations. Also, If you are someone that would like to sponsor the entire purchase and give back to this community please reach out, your donations go to the future of tomorrow plain and simple. Donations can be made in our store or directly to the Sunnyslope Garden Club at the school. Thank you in advance for your support. One love! | | Why Garden? Our mission is to raise money for our future gardeners, the kids. We will be creating Little Shops first Jr. Gardeners club, to bring the community and families together. Working with some of the most talented gardeners we want to educate by sharing our knowledge. We understand how important it is to educate our youth on where food comes from and how easy it is to grow your own food, herbs and plants. Starting a kid’s garden club can have numerous benefits, such as promoting environmental awareness, teaching children about sustainability and gardening practices, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork, encouraging healthy eating habits, providing hands-on learning experiences, and promoting physical activity and time spent outdoors. Additionally, a kid’s garden club can help children develop important life skills such as patience, problem-solving, and creativity. With your help we will be able to maintain and grow.

🌼 | | Woman in Horticulture History Anne Spencer, poet1882-1975 “Peace is here and in every season a quiet beauty… what is pain but happiness here amid these green and wordless patterns, indefinite texture of blade and leaf…
| | The first African American woman to be published in the renowned Norton Anthology of Poetry, Anne Spencer was a true poet of the garden. Many of her poems explore the mythical and symbolic power of flowers and the natural world, as well as the sheer joy of gardening. Her home garden in Lynchburg, Virginia served as an informal social space for leading African American thinkers of her time. | | Sunny Slope High School Garden Club | | For those of you that have children that go to Sunny Slope High School, or you live in the neighborhood you can’t help but notice the high school has been expanding and with that meant losing our garden space. But that won’t stop us from growing, thanks to school funding and a generous donation the school is now growing vertically and indoors with these 2 beautiful tower gardens. We are so excited to continue to teach our youth the importance of growing your own food and all the types of ways that are possible. | | | If you are interested in learning how you can get a tower for your local school, please call (602)887-9330 | | Flora The Little Shop Garden Explorer | | Let’s find out what Flora found in the garden today. “Cheddar” Cauliflower?? I bet your wondering where does the color come from? No, they’re not painted or dyed! An orange cauliflower is a variety of cauliflower that has a vibrant orange color instead of the traditional white. This color variation is due to the presence of beta-carotene, which is also found in carrots and gives them their orange hue. Orange cauliflower is not only visually appealing but also contains higher levels of beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A and has antioxidant properties.
Orange cauliflower is also dubbed “cheddar” cauliflower, though it tastes nothing like cheese. Its flavor is mild, slightly sweet, and creamy. Similarly, purple cauliflower is mild and slightly sweet with nutty nuances. | | | Your Neighborhood Health and Beauty Professionals | Tonia Sanchez Aesthetician / Wax Specialist / Makeup & Spray Tan Artist | | Owner of Catch a Tan Airbrush Studio, Tonia offers a variety of services geared to bring out the sexy in you.
