AUGUST the month of Harvest and abundance

“Dry August and warmth doth harvest no harm.”

AUGUST

the month of

Harvest and abundance

Summer declines and roses have grown rare,
But cottage crofts are gay with hollyhocks,
And in old garden walks you breathe an air
Fragrant of pinks and August-smelling stocks.
—John Todhunter (1839-1916)

August’s zodiac sign: Leos are represented by the Lion.

They are ruled by the Sun and have natural leadership traits

Flowers of the month of AUGUST

Gladiolus and Poppy.

The official birth flowers for August are Gladiolus and Poppy

The Gladiolus is a member of the Iris family (Iridaceae) and is native to Africa, the Mediterranean, and southern Europe, with more than 300 species that come in a range of vibrant colors. It is a classic perennial known for its tall flower spikes and large, colorful blooms! The gladiolus symbolizes strength of character, sincerity, and generosity.

The Poppy symbolizes eternal sleep, oblivion, and also imagination. Poppies vary in size quite a bit, but generally have delicate yet showy flowers of four to six petals surrounding many stamens; the flowers grow on long, hairy stalks. The poppy’s name comes from the Latin word pappa, meaning milk. When cut, the stalks and buds of some poppy species produce a milky, latex-like substance. Most notably, the sap of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferous) has been harvested for use in pharmaceutical opiates and illicit drugs.

August’s primary birthstone is peridot, which is said to symbolize strength and healing power, protecting its wearer from nightmares and evil, ensuring harmony and happiness.

Flora the Little Shop Garden Explorer

Even though it’s hot outside there is still lots to do indoors and Flora is just the right girl for the job. Today she is using a lightweight spray bottle that’s perfect for small hands and with mom’s supervision she is misting her indoor plants.

Let’s Learn About Misting Plants

Misting house plants can help increase humidity levels around the plant, which can be beneficial for certain types of plants that thrive in humid environments. It can also help prevent the leaves from drying out, especially in dry indoor environments. However, it is important to note that not all house plants require misting, and over-misting can lead to issues such as mold growth or root rot. It is best to research the specific needs of your house plants to determine if misting is necessary for their care.

It’s best to use filtered or distilled water when misting your houseplants and the best time to do so is in the morning to midafternoon

NATIONAL HONEYBEE DAY

August 17th

World Honeybee Day gives you the perfect opportunity to pay honor to the incredible honeybee.

It is a day to recognize the contribution that honeybees make to our everyday lives, as well as learning about the different steps that we can take in order to protect this vital species.

Honeybees provide us with honey, and this is one of the many reasons why we should be thankful for them! Honey is a golden, thick liquid, which is produced by bees using the nectar of plants that are flowering. The kind of flowers that bees visit will impact the texture, smell, and taste of the honey, resulting in different types of honey, including orange blossom, clover, acacia, and manuka honey.

Learn more about bees @Twisted Bee Farms

Like every living thing on Earth bees need water to survive. Beyond drinking water to keep hydrated, bees need water for the well-being of their bee hives. Bees take water back to the hive. The water keeps the humidity levels under control, cools the hive, and helps in the production of honey. Therefore, our little bee bath can not only help one little bee, but it can also help an entire hive. Amazing!

How to create an AWESOME Bee Garden at home 🐝

A bee bath is a safe, clean, and shallow source of water for bees and other pollinators in your garden. The water needs to be shallow, so the bees (or butterflies) won’t drown.

Things you need:

  • Terra cotta pots with saucer or shallow dish

  • Assorted marbles, rocks or stones

  • Glue gun

  • Acrylic pants (non-toxic)

  • Clear, craft sealer – for outdoors

  • Paintbrushes (optional)
